“Degrees don’t guarantee freedom — skills do.”

Introduction
For years, we were told one simple formula: go to school, get good grades, get a job, escape poverty. This formula motivated me to start pursuing my career in education. Although it seems to have worked for so many people in the past. What I know is this; that formula worked in the past. But today, it’s broken.
I’ve noticed that millions of educated people are still poor. I know of some graduates who are riding bike on the streets. Not just because there is no job, but some say that working for a whole month and by the end of the month you can only recieve a salary of eighty or ninety thousand naira. They say it’s even better to they ride bike, that they can raise such money within two weeks of daily street hustling. It now seem as if degrees hang on walls while bills pile up. Anyways, this doesn’t mean education is useless or scam—but it means schooling alone is no longer enough.
One thing that is now sure and certain is that in the digital age, poverty is not cured by certificates. It is cured by skills that create value.

The Difference Between Education and Skills
As I look deeply into education and compare it with skill acquisition, I saw some differences that exists.
The truth is that education often focuses on:
- Memorizing theory
- Writing exams
- Acquiring certificates
- Obedience and memorization
However, skills focus on:
- Solving real problems
- Creating value
- Producing income
- Adapting to change
Thus, the implication is that education informs you.
Skills empower you.
how digital skills fight poverty
Why Schooling Alone Fails to Cure Poverty
Now that you can see the impact of both education and skills to our lives. It’s crucial that I show you why I say that schooling alone cannot cure poverty.
1. Schools Don’t Teach Income Skills
Most schools don’t teach:
- How to make money online
- How to build a business
- How to market a product
- How to manage finances
I’ve noticed that graduates leave school prepared to seek jobs, not to create income.
2. The Job Market Is Saturated
As I look into our higher Institutions, I discover that thousands graduate every year with the same certificates.
This leads to:
- High competition
- Low wages
- Underemployment
- Job insecurity
It becomes obvious that a certificate loses power when everyone has it.
education vs skills in the digital age
3. Technology Is Moving Faster Than Curriculum
Have you noticed that technology evolves yearly.
While school curricula change slowly.
By the time students graduate:
- Some skills are outdated
- New opportunities already exist
- Employers want practical ability, not theory
economic empowerment through skills
4. Degrees Don’t Guarantee Relevance
You may have you degree, that’s very fine. But one truth you must know now is that what the market rewards is:
- What you can do
- What problems you can solve
- How fast you can adapt
I’ve seen many high-paying opportunities today that don’t require degrees—but what they demand from you is competence.
schooling vs real-world skills
I tried many books, but see the one that change the whole thing for me!
How Skills Actually Break Poverty
From what I’ve heard and seen, it’s clear that skills actually break poverty. This can be achieved because:
1. Skills Increase Your Earning Power
If you acquire the right skill:
- You earn more per hour
- You choose better opportunities
- You escape low-wage traps
Skills give you leverage.
2. Skills Travel Anywhere
From my experience as a blogger, I’ve noticed that a strong skill:
- Works online
- Works globally
- Is not limited by location
This is powerful for people in developing economies.
skill-based learning
3. Skills Create Independence
One thing I like about skill, even as a digital marketer is that skills allow you to:
- Freelance
- Build online income
- Start small businesses
- Create digital products
Independence weakens poverty’s grip.
online learning platforms

Education + Skills Is the Real Cure
Remember what I told you earlier. Education is not useless, neither is it a scam. So this content is not an attack on education.
The winning formula today is:
Education + Practical Skills + Digital Awareness
Education gives foundation.
Skills give income.
Together, they create opportunity.
How to Start Building Skills
- Identify a skill in demand
- Learn through practice, not theory alone
- Apply it immediately
- Improve by doing real work
- Monetize gradually
You don’t need perfection—you need progress.
vocational training
Final Thoughts
Now whether you are educated or not, possesses certificate or not, I want to say that poverty survives where people rely only on certificates. Also poverty weakens where people build useful skills.
Schooling can open doors—but skills keep them open.
In the digital age, the question is no longer:
“What did you study?”
It’s:
“What can you do?”
